Homemade Ice Cream You Cannot Resist

We are in the thick of summer, and one of our all-time favorite desserts for this time of year is homemade ice cream. Homemade ice cream is the perfect dessert for backyard gatherings, summer parties, and poolside celebrations. Since National Ice Cream day was this week, we thought it was the perfect time to let you in on our super easy recipe for this delectable treat.

This recipe was passed down through our family by my Grandma Agnes (the Anchor Dot's mom). When someone in our family is celebrating a birthday, they generally request homemade ice cream tailored to their favorite flavor. Not that you asked, but my favorite is banana! Where are all my banana peeps? My grandsons prefer Oreo cookies and cream. One of the greatest attributes about our recipe is that it has several variations to alter the flavor to your particular preference.

Homemade Oreo Ice Cream

Prep Time: 15 mins

Total Time: 40-60 mins (including freeze time)

Serving: 16 servings, approximately 1 cup per person (4 qt ice cream maker)

INGREDIENTS:

4 eggs, well beaten

2 c. sugar

3 oz. instant pudding mix (use desired flavor such as Chocolate, Vanilla, Oreo, etc.)

8-oz. Cool Whip

2 qts. milk

2 T. vanilla

rock salt

ice

FOR OREO: 1 package of Oreo cookies and 1- 3 oz box of Oreo Cookies 'N Creme Pudding Mix

Since Oreo is our kid's favorite flavor, that is the flavor we made today and showcase in our ingredients photo. We used a 3 oz. box Oreo pudding mix and approximately 30 Oreo cookies.

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Beat the eggs.

  2. Add sugar, mixing well.

  3. Stir in the dry pudding mix, cool whip, and vanilla.

  4. Add milk slowly while mixing.

  5. Pour into an ice cream freezer can.

  6. Fill to freezer line with more milk if necessary.

  7. Freeze in the ice cream freezer until firm.

  8. NOTES: Fruits can be added, such as mashed bananas or pineapple, after the ice cream has finished freezing. Remove the paddle and stir in your fruits or cookies. We added Oreo cookies to make Oreo.

OTHER VARIATIONS:

  • OREO: Use oreo pudding mix and 30 Oreos.

  • VANILLA: Use pudding mix.

  • CHOCOLATE: Use chocolate pudding mix and a small can of Hershey's syrup.

  • BANANA: Use banana pudding mix and 4 smashed bananas.

  • REESE'S PEANUT BUTTER CUP: Use vanilla pudding mix and fold Reese's cups up after ice cream is frozen. Add peanut butter if desired.
